How Do I Select and Measure a Fire Rated Vertical Discharge Door?

Discharge Doors are located at the bottom of the chute above the bin in the collection room. Discharge doors are either horizontal or vertical. There are two types of horizontal discharge doors. The first type is Fire Rated, has an accordion style damper, a fusible link, and is generally used on trash and recycle chutes. The second type is fire resistive, has a door on a rolling track, a fusible link, and should only be used in applications where a non-fire rated door is acceptable. Vertical discharge doors are typically used on linen chutes and are often part of a hopper style chute end. All are designed to slam shut in the event of a fire.

Vertical discharge doors are offered as a complete door or as a door and frame. The complete door includes the hopper and stand, unlike the door and frame. Our "HD" Series has a heavy duty, hot rolled, galvanized steel bottom. Our “W” Series hoppers have a reinforced impact plate. The “M” Series does not have an impact plate. For applications where the chute has lots of intake doors or where high volumes of soiled linen are sent down the chute we recommend the "HD" or “W” Series.

To determine the size door you need:

First, determine the size of the chute. Fire Rated Vertical Discharge Doors have a width and a height. The first number corresponds to the width of the door and usually the diameter of the chute. For example, if you have a round chute measuring 24” in diameter you will need to order a 24” Complete Hopper or a 24” x 30” Door and Frame Assembly.

Second, the standard throat length (distance from the center of the chute to the edge of the door) is 20". If you need a different throat length, select the correct size door then put the number of extra inches you require in the quantity box!

Third, the standard height from the floor is 4’. If you need a different height, select to add to the height and enter the number of extra inches you require!
